We are family
Sandro and Alon were married in California
and spent 14 years building a life together in Los Angeles. Sandro, a Canadian, worked on feature
films for Disney and other Hollywood studios. Israeli-born Alon, was brought to the US by Microsoft.
After four years Sandro left the film industry and opened up a fashion business with the help of Alon,
who continued to work at Microsoft and received his US citizenship. In 2010, Sandro's visa was set to
expire and, since the US did not recognize his marriage to Alon, the couple was forced to close their
nationally-recognized business and move their life abroad. They eventually settled in Barcelona.
Microsoft lost an employee with over a decade of experience, and Los Angeles lost a business that
provided jobs for over 30 individuals. (In)Voluntary departure follows their last days in Los Angeles
while packing their lives and receiving the support of their friends and ex-colleagues, and shows how
for some "advanced" countries, we are still not family.
