Eighteen years of the Mostra...

The gay and lesbian film festival of the Casal Lambda has now been going for 18 years. This makes FIRE!! the oldest LGBT film festival in Spain, and one of the oldest in Europe. We have been through a lot of up and downs and gained much experience and, with the same enthusiasm as in day one, each year we have a renewed motivation that helps our festival become a point of reference both within and beyond our borders.

How have we managed this? What has been the key to the success of this project, which has received a great deal of institutional support and enjoys the year-on-year backing of the public? A first reply is without doubt the fact that FIRE!! is a collective initiative. Behind it there is an organisation, the Casal Lambda, with a working method and an understanding that its mission is to fight for LGTB rights within an open framework, i.e. society as a whole and each and every one of its citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation. The professionalism of the FIRE!! team has been and remains a key factor in bringing about the 18th edition in a good state of health, despite the current economic hardship, and in being able to state that we shall still have a film festival in the coming years. Nobody doubts this. The Cinema and Video Festival Collective of Catalonia (CI&VI) itself recognises our festival as being a reference point and necessary. And of course there are those who have been part of the Casal and who have contributed with their selfless and voluntary work to help pick up and grow FIRE!! when it has been necessary. Nor can we minimise the value of the support received from the public administrations and institutions such as the French Institute and the Casa Àsia, as well as many others.

We are using the new projector for the first time to welcome the 18th edition of FIRE!!, if possible with more enthusiasm than when we did so in 1995. As it has always been a pioneer among festivals, FIRE!! puts new challenges before us this year, to face areas such as religion, current themes such as bullying at school or homophobia without prejudice, as well as all the debates regarding transsexuality and gender. Cinema is part of life, and we invite you to live it and enjoy it. Where can you do so if not at FIRE!!?

While in Saint Denis, north of Paris, Jean-Piere Vincent stages Iphis and Ianthe, a play by Isaac de Benserade written and staged for the first time in 1634 that talks about a woman who marries another, the riots against equal marriage were happening week after week, in Paris and around the country. On Tuesday April, 23th 2013 at 5 p.m., the French National Assembly passed the law that allows same-sex couples to get married and adopt children. The Republic had just recognized homosexuals as full citizens.

Although three centuries have elapsed since the premiere of Iphis and Ianthe, largely inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, taboos about homosexuality and its recognition by society as a whole have not disappeared, and it must be noted that the fight for equal rights in the minds of certain people is not over. Very recently, in France, home to the rights of men and citizens, a despicable homophobic attack reminded us that hatred —born out of the fear of the Other, different in essence— could lead to the worst.

Through cinema, FIRE!! brings to light, as every year since 1995, the differences in various contexts of society and through individual and unique stories. The festival is an example of education that brings about discovery and openness. Once again, FIRE!! offers the chance to see, hear and recognize the Other, similar and unique at the same time. It invites us, in its way, to live together in respect and tolerance. FIRE!! pursues that goal and embodies values that the French Institute shares when it becomes associated with a new edition of a festival that belongs to everyone and is designed for all.

Idolisation

When everything seems to be falling apart is when it takes little or nothing at all to be one of the crowd, to abandon the responsibility of being oneself, to lack faith, to get dragged down by fear, to forget that there is no better lifeline than oneself, and to fall into the temptation of building up idols. However, these are troubled times in which politics, religion, culture and the media build idols and visionaries which we are to blindly follow, leaders of opinion and of conduct, moral references to base our ideologies on, saviours of patriotism and holier-than-thou types, sportspeople and artists, rulers, kings and plebs, economists, commentators and bullshitters who tell us: this way...

Here at the FIRE!! festival we defend freedom above all, the need to expand our thinking, to widen the scope of our actions, to open up communities, to deconstruct our identity to start from scratch, questioning ourselves and the society we live in, which is no more nor less than a reflection of our own individuality. We demonstrate different points of view to change our own, to activate a critical conscience and propose tools for reflection to move forward and to grow. And we do this using stories which talk of people who fight to find their space and their place. They are stories from all over the world, with a special focus on transsexuals who even now, in the 21st century, keep fighting against an atrophied and cruel society, which still will not accept a person's freedom to adapt their gender to their reality. And through these stories of anonymous heroes who try to survive in a society which still questions and discriminates against ways of loving that are different.

And we do this by looking without complexes at that queen who symbolises power, force, the authority to trivialise her and strip her of her absurd privilege and of her high position, to convert her into a simple and beautiful artichoke in flames.

In an era in which we are seeing freedoms withdrawn throughout the world, FIRE!! works in favour of the globalisation of human rights, the diversity of affection, respect and tolerance and, above all, the freedom for each and every one of us to be who we want.
