Located in a Mexican immigrant neighbourhood in LA, Mosquita y Mari tells the story of two fifteen-year-old Chicana girls who grow up together in Huntington Park, surrounded by difficulties, illegal immigrants and people without resources, mired in the confusion of an age where ruthlessness and identity formation mark it all. After an incident at school, Mari is threatened with expulsion from the country and receives Mosquita's help. A deep and loyal friendship, told with extreme visual and narrative simplicity, seeking intimacy and love in the midst of conflict.
In a time when they are trying to legalize more than 13 million immigrants in the US, the vast majority of them Mexican, the debut film by Aurora Guerrero, made with a ridiculous budget, makes more sense than ever and thus has garnered the Sundance applause for its courage, tenderness and truth to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Outfest 2012.
