Set in present-day New York,
Keep the Lights on tells the story of documentarist Erik Rothman and lawyer Paul Luly, who first meet and then struggle to overcome several difficulties
to build up a steady relationship, a life together and a home. At the same time, each of them fights to overcome his own addictions with the passage of time.
This is story where intimacy is shown in a stark and open way, going in-depth into topics like friendship and sex, but above all love. It's an honest portrayal of the nature and difficulties of personal relationships from a contemporary point of
view where we can see ourselves reflected. The refined visual sensitivity found in Sachs's previous films, such as Forty Shades of Blue (2005), is supported here by the great music by Arthur Russell, which sets the lyrical and dramatic tone of the
picture.
