Travelling through the US in 2008 to film the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, Julie Gali steps into a whole different campaign. A group of Mormon organizations are supporting Proposition 8 in California to annul same-sex marriage, approved by the California Supreme Court. Julie decides to film it and follows the LGBT community during its fight up to the National Equality March of 2009 in Washington. In contrast to the election of Obama and the hope of improvement of Civil Rights, the California referendum surprisingly ends with the passing of Proposition 8.
Despite being declared unconstitutional by that same court afterward, Proposition 8 left 18,000 marriages in limbo and became the first set back to Civil Rights in US history. With superb technical skills, Illegal Loveshows us the dangers of religious fanatics and the importance of activism to defend our rights, which should never be taken for granted..
