As the organiser of the Mostra FIRE!! film festival, Casal Lambda welcomes you to this new 2012 edition. This is a year which has been affected by the global crisis, which has not just been financial and political, but also one of notable social changes. With renewed vigour, Casal Lambda accepts the undertaking to be the active subject of what goes on around it, from the nearest to the furthest events. This year is a good example of this, as this edition of the Mostra FIRE!! has a strong radical tone.

Casal Lambda is not removed from the new social movements, such as 15M in our country, or the Arab Spring. In the world in which these movements arise, there is no guarantee that the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual individuals will be respected.

The freedoms achieved in some western countries are but a pipe dream in about 80 countries in the world, and homosexuality is still a capital offence in around half a dozen more. All the things that many generations have fought and sacrificed themselves for, such as social, labour, education or civil rights, are under threat today. For this reason Casal Lambda cannot forsake its leading role in the great challenges which modern society presents, in matters such as education, health, social justice and so many others, and also of course from an artistic and reflective perspective.

This is why the Mostra FIRE!! is relevant, as a festival to enjoy good films and also as a meeting place and a discussion forum, as an amplifier to the world and a platform from which to denounce anything that does not work.

Obviously, we must state our gratitude for the work of the FIRE!! team, as well as the volunteers of the Mostra and the cooperation of the French Institute in Barcelona, Casa Asia and the Council of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, participating this year for the first time with a new venue..

Human rights are constantly violated, in many places in the world and sometimes even very close to where we are. Progress in this field is slow and backward steps are still too frequent.

Human rights constitute an essential dimension of the French action abroad, and France is one of the most active countries in the promotion of fundamental rights in the world: children's rights, women's rights, universal abolition of the death penalty, freedom of speech, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender rights and so forth. Public opinion coverage of these issues is very strong worldwide. Therefore, we must use all legitimate tools of influence available to better defend a cause linked to France's name. Among them, cultural action constitutes a powerful vector.

The French Institute always makes an effort to include the human rights dimension in its programming. For that reason, and after hosting last May the Human Rights Film Festival, we now open our doors in July to the 17th edition of FIRE!!, the Barcelona International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

"The fight goes on…" That's the Mostra FIRE!! 2012 in a nutshell. The motto is old, but still relevant nowadays. In fact, an advertising campaign exemplified it with humour during the recent presidential election in France, directing the candidates' attention to LGBT parenting. It is also valid for the future, unfortunately, since we are far from reaching the ideal in our supposedly post-modern societies. If the best of worlds, as presented by Aldous Huxley, is not desirable, a better one, made out of acknowledging others, listening, respect, tolerance and justice, is an urgent need for each one of us. FIRE!! plays its part, since it invites us to engage in discussions, to understand rather than to judge, and maybe also to change our point of view about inequalities and discrimination to women and men because of their life choices.

Human rights are not a choice. We would all grow up if the rights of children, women and LGBT people were recognised and respected by everybody in all latitudes. In that case the world would be a little bit better indeed.

This year, back from our trip to the backstage of the Berlin Festival, we return highly spirited after seeing the great work done by the many LGBT film festivals around the world. Some take place under great stress and hostility, like the ones celebrated in Beijing, Ankara or South Africa. These hostilities manifest itself, for instance, with the daily changes of venue and the communications via SMS in China, the difficult situation of human rights in the African continent, where people fear for their own lives, or the hostility of Muslim governments towards gay films, which are solely financed by Western embassies.

That is why initiatives such as the one that has been put in motion in Berlin are essential. The Queer Academy, along with the Legacy programme at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), is the world's largest archive of audiovisual materials on the fight for LGBT rights, which are once again in danger even in countries like Spain. These enterprises show the importance of our legacy, of the testimonials of present and past activists, of the classification and universal dissemination of such a great cultural and ethical heritage.

La Mostra FIRE!! wants to go on being a cultural reference in our country, focusing our discourse and programming on independence, a fighting spirit and quality in such a historical moment. We must stimulate a critical conscience that provides answers to an outdated, unfair and immoral system. For this reason, from the catalogue and flyers to the selection of the films and documentaries, the Mostra offers tools for thought and critique, to evoke what has been achieved until now and to remember what lies ahead.

We look forward to a world where everyone can live, a world where the rights of everyone are respected, a fairer, freer, cleaner, more sustainable and happier world. Let's hope that films, the fight for freedom, justice and love are the catalysts that help us achieve our goal.
