Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho – literally, "Today I Want to go Back Alone" – the Brazilian director Daniel Ribeiro's opera prima, could not have got off to a better start. The winner of the Teddy Award for Best Film at the Berlinale, amongst many other accolades from festivals around the world, this film tells the story of Leonardo, a blind teenage boy who yearns for physical and emotional independence. His day-to-day life and his relationship with his best friend, Giovana, as well as the way he sees the world are all turned upside-down by the arrival of a new boy, Gabriel, at school.
What at first might appear to be a teen film turns beautifully into an unusual work, one devoted to equality and respect for sexual diversity among groups of people with disabilities. A touching, superbly directed movie that cannot fail to charm all audiences at the festival.
