Ground control to Major Tom, is there nothing we can do?

Ch-ch-ch-changes! The latest edition of FIRE!! is undergoing significant changes. We have taken a remarkable qualitative leap; the agreement with Filmin brings prestige to Casal Lambda's film festival. It gives us visibility and Fame, to be known even Across the Universe! FIRE!! is the only LGBT film festival in the great window to the world that is Filmin.

The internet is our ally. It has made raising funds, so necessary in this period of budgetary Sorrow, a reality. So it's time to give our thanks to the Heroes of our microfunding initiative, whose contributions demonstrate the need for a festival like FIRE!! It has been An Occasional Dream which should not stand still, and which opens new doors.

All this is thanks to the great professional team that works on the festival. They are not Absolute Beginners. On the contrary, their more than Five Years at the head of FIRE!! demonstrate a progression that has resulted in the national and international recognition of the festival, not only from public institutions but also from the film industry, and especially from the viewing public, which increases year after year.

This year, FIRE!! focuses on bisexuality; the great unknown. Is the challenge in its visibility? In its acceptance and understanding? Does anyone question the heterosexual side of bisexuality? Does the controversy, After All, not fall on the side of the same sex attraction? These questions invite reflection and debate.

The outlook of FIRE!! is always wide and complex. In a world where we still have to denounce major injustices such as those currently happening in Russia or Uganda, we want to be The Dreamers. We want to imagine A Better Future, a better and more just world.

The Casal Lambda is proud to offer tools to help normalise homosexuality, whether they be enjoying the cinema or by way of educational sessions. When a young person comes to us, Afraid and looking for his or her place in the world, there is nothing more satisfying than to help that person to move on, and to understand that he or she is not alone. The role we carry out should always be remembered, especially in these times when it seems that the battle has been won.

It's Little Wonder that cinema has always been an instrument at the service of debate and reflection. That's the way we understand it at FIRE!! with our passion for cinema and our desire to change our reality, transferring from the screens to our lives. A poet once said that life goes from Ashes to Ashes, but the most important thing is the road along which we travel, which we leave as our legacy. The Casal Lambda's film festival wants to make a contribution, through culture, to this on-going and transformative work...

The current edition highlights the figure of David Bowie, someone who has always championed sexual liberty and the joy in life. We want to follow his example to be a Rebel Rebel against injustice, to be Wild As The Wind, to tell Major Tom that he was wrong, that there is something we can do, that we are not like The Man Who Sold the World...

If I'm Dreaming My Life, then I want everything to be possible.

While in Saint Denis, north of Paris, Jean-Piere Vincent stages Iphis and Ianthe, a play by Isaac de Benserade written and staged for the first time in 1634 that talks about a woman who marries another, the riots against equal marriage were happening week after week, in Paris and around the country. On Tuesday April, 23th 2013 at 5 p.m., the French National Assembly passed the law that allows same-sex couples to get married and adopt children. The Republic had just recognized homosexuals as full citizens.

Although three centuries have elapsed since the premiere of Iphis and Ianthe, largely inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, taboos about homosexuality and its recognition by society as a whole have not disappeared, and it must be noted that the fight for equal rights in the minds of certain people is not over. Very recently, in France, home to the rights of men and citizens, a despicable homophobic attack reminded us that hatred —born out of the fear of the Other, different in essence— could lead to the worst.

Through cinema, FIRE!! brings to light, as every year since 1995, the differences in various contexts of society and through individual and unique stories. The festival is an example of education that brings about discovery and openness. Once again, FIRE!! offers the chance to see, hear and recognize the Other, similar and unique at the same time. It invites us, in its way, to live together in respect and tolerance. FIRE!! pursues that goal and embodies values that the French Institute shares when it becomes associated with a new edition of a festival that belongs to everyone and is designed for all.

Where is the B?

LGBT is the collectively accepted and recommended acronym used since the 90's to refer to the old "gay community". Nowadays, it finally includes more awareness towards sexual diversity in gay, lesbian and transgender people. Sometimes, the letter Q (from Queer) is also added to integrate persons not identified with any of the previous categories, as happens with pansexual, asexual and intersexual individuals.

This year, FIRE!! aims to focus and reflect on the B, and ask: Who are the bisexuals? How do they really feel? Do they need to be represented? Did they come to join the LGBT community on their own volition? Must they ultimately opt for one orientation or are they attracted to both genders all their lives? Are they capable of loving, living with and building a stable long-term relationship with persons form both genders? Are they even more free and generous when they love? Do they look for or need to be with other bisexuals? How do they relate to gay, lesbian and transgender people? How do gay, lesbian and transgender people relate to them? Are they even stronger and more complete because of their ability to love both genders? Where is the B?

This year's festival is dedicated to David Bowie, one of the greatest icons of the 20th century, as much a pop hero as Warhol and, as it were, a bisexual. Bowie is an artist, writer, musician, activist, director and actor. He has been, and still is, an indisputable inspiration to the worlds of fashion, design, music and youth culture. Through his coherent body of work he represents freedom, creativity and struggle and the importance of this work is universally respected. Bowie is the total artist.

Through him, FIRE!! 2014 inspires the celebration and hedonism of glam in the first-person plural, the "we" that represents our community. We have Bowie's "We can be heroes" as ethical and aesthetic reference. He is an artist who breaks stereotypes and declares himself a bisexual, a freedom fighter who represents creativity, imagination and commitment. We all can be heroes… because we are standing up, free, beautiful, creative, powerful, unique, certain, brave and committed, and because we are prepared to change this dull, uniform, intimidated world that slavishly follows money, dogma and power.

We want to celebrate through glam: FIRE!! encourages everyone to explore without boundaries, to look inside but also out, to create without inhibition, to be extraordinary, to live fearlessly, to express themselves as they see fit… and to share it with the world.

WE CAN BE HEROES. WE CAN BE BOWIE.

FIRE!! 19º

The new edition of the FIRE!!, 19th International Exhibition of Gay and Lesbian Cinema of Barcelona, once again calls on citizens to share in an atmosphere of diversity which, as always, enriches us all.

In this festival, organized by the Casal Lambda, the contribution of film to the collective imagination is equivalent to those provided by music, visual arts and culture in general. Since the 1970s, the convergence of cultural practices (especially music, visual arts and cinema) with the civil rights struggle has had a positive influence on the world; we can see examples of this phenomenon in this year's exhibition.

One of the highlighted issues of FIRE!! 2014 is bisexuality and its visibility. As in many other instances, cinema provides breadth of vision and, therefore, depth to our gaze.

Moreover, everyone is aware that Barcelona and Catalonia have been on the forefront of sexual tolerance and acceptance. FIRE!! is an on-going example of this inclination towards empathy in our society, of this liberating transformation.

I am glad to congratulate the organizers and invite everybody to participate in this festival in order to continue building, together, a more open-minded, plural and progressive society.
