40 years of freedom, equality and diversity

This is a year of celebration. Casal Lambda has reached its fortieth year, four decades of struggle, hard work and devotion on the part of hundreds, perhaps thousands of men and women who have come to the centre, spending hours of their time on a common cause, that of defending our rights and calling for recognition of our freedoms for the individual and collective good.

Casal Lambda has changed greatly, has been transformed over these forty years, and has survived!

Where are we now? This is a time of uncertainty and radical changes in the world. Economic, political and social changes. Casal Lambda cannot but be affected by all this. They say that change is preceded by chaos: chaos leads to change and change leads to a new order. What will this new order be like? Well, we know what we want it to be like, and we are working towards this.

We want a Casal Lambda that is active and alive, its doors open to society, interacting with the new times. We want a Casal Lambda where the focus is on people, and not concern about finance. We want a Casal Lambda that continues to be useful to society as a whole, to the members, to young and old, to women, to people with disabilities, with needs… A Casal Lambda that continues to be the central element in the LGTBI movement in Catalonia and a reference at international level.

And the FIRE!! film festival plays an important role in all this. This year, the programme reminds us all that France is a leading country in the fight for civil rights. Freedom, equality, diversity, are also the motto of Casal Lambda. So we celebrate twenty-one years of Lambda film, and forty years of the centre’s activities. We can look back and congratulate ourselves on what has been achieved. Then we can look forward to a future in which, together, we will continue to work with the Casal Lambda to achieve much more.

Emilio Ruiz, President of Casal Lambda

Firstly, the universal goal of our message, by showing, through film, the reality of LGBTI people around the world, not limiting ourselves to our own environment. Human rights are universal, and we shall never cease in our fight until they are respected throughout the world. We will always support the globalisation of human rights, because universality is the essence both of art in general and film in particular. That is why, this year, we will see films from Chile, Lithuania, Japan, Sweden, Kenya, Mexico, the United States, Austria and the Philippines, as well as from our own country. And we will talk about emotional, sexual and gender diversity through stories about love, heartbreak, pain, struggle… in both fictional works and documentaries devoted to truly admirable lives.

Secondly, that same universal view of diversity leads us not only to defend the rights of our group, but also to open up to society as a whole, in a two-way approach: attracting all kinds of audiences to learn about our reality whilst, at the same time, including in the vision we put forward other vulnerable groups that have been mistreated on grounds of their race, sexual orientation, nationality, gender or religious ideas. When one of us is attacked, all of us are attacked; when a human being is considered “illegal” and must be deported, we are all being rejected; when intolerant, exclusive ideologies are imposed anywhere in the world, we all suffer. When freedom, equality and diversity are curtailed, the end is approaching for us all.

That is why FIRE!! is a wake-up call to consciences everywhere, a regenerating flame. And this year our spotlight falls on women, without further classification, placing them, in all their power, at the centre of our message in the hope that their energy will expand from the most humble margins to the real centres of power, helping to make us freer and more equal, and persuading us to accept diversity as a source of wealth, respect and justice.

Freedom as an antidote against that pathological intolerance of the human being who is “afraid" of those who are different; equality in order to guarantee everyone’s rights; diversity, to be different, without fear.

Joako Ezpeleta, Co-director of Mostra FIRE!!

As Mayor of Barcelona, it is an honour for me to devote these words to the FIRE!! festival, which reaches its twenty-first edition this year, an impressive figure which demonstrates that this event has become a long-standing tradition and reflects the organisers’ determination to continue, year after year, with the same energy and enthusiasm.

One of the great virtues of culture in general and film in particular is that it enables broad audiences to discover other points of view, other realities. Telling stories that move us requires, firstly, a special sensitivity towards themes that might otherwise go unnoticed and, secondly, a good team behind one to help create the project – even more so in the case of filmmaking.

We can be glad to have a festival like this one, because telling stories with, moreover, the goal of raising the profile of people from LGTBI groups, is no easy task, but you have done just that with great determination for all these years. This collective struggle to win recognition for the rights of LGTBI people —people who have suffered, in the final analysis, from the hegemony exercised by a system that excluded them— is absolutely vital in a city advancing towards full democracy that seeks to adopt plural policies and recognise the diversity and richness of each and every different life.

Thank you for helping to make our city a fertile place for initiatives like this and thanks, also, to all those who work, day after day, at the Casal Lambda (which celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year) and at other LGTBI associations, so that festivals like this one can take place.

Best wishes for an excellent festival, and —long live FIRE!!

This year we celebrate the 21st edition of the FIRE!! Festival. For many years, then, the film festival has been staged as a way of voicing our demands and as a tool for achieving recognition and social transformation. The association that organises and promotes the festival, Casal Lambda, was established in 1976 as Institut Lambda with the mission of leading, through culture, the fight to normalise the LGBTI community. This struggle continues even today, and events and festivals like FIRE!! remind us that, although we still have a long way to go as a society, we are coming closer every day to achieving our goals of winning equality and recognition for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The festival aims to focus on affective and sexual diversity in the broadest sense, by showing a selection of feature, documentary and short films characterised to a certain extent by their educational approach. FIRE!! has become consolidated as an annual event, not only for the LGBT community, but also for the audiovisual industry, due to the quality of the festival programme, which features both films seen for the first time and works that have received awards at international film shows. It is interesting to note that the name of the festival is a tribute to the eponymous New York magazine published in the late-1920s, directed by the writer Richard Bruce Nugent, a black homosexual. Nugent had a highly productive career and was a beacon in the dark for black gay movement of the time, as well as being an active member of Harlem Renaissance (a cultural movement established by the African-American community in Harlem in the 1920s). Like the FIRE!! festival itself, then, this African-American writer embodies social critique, and the struggle that many, many social movements have been forced to employ in order to make their demands heard and defend their rights in a society that is often homophobic, patriarchal and racist. The festival also provides a platform for promoting partnerships, meetings and coordination amongst partners, as well as an arena in which artists who are refused a voice in their own countries can make themselves heard. Every year, moreover, Fire!! cooperates with Amnesty International and the French Institute of Barcelona, two organisations that are always interested in initiatives aimed at championing human rights around the world. The number of those attending the festival has risen constantly over the last few years, with attendance doubling to 7,000 spectators, a sign of the good health that both Fire!! and audiovisual culture enjoy at the moment.
