Last Summer
Last Summer is one of the most truly special films at the 2015 festival, a delicate, subtle masterpiece directed by Mark Thiedeman in his first feature film. Rich in luminous, poetic narrative, showing nature in ways reminiscent of the films of Terrence Malick, Thiedeman tells the simple story of love between two teenagers, Luke and Jonah, who spend the last days of summer together as they face the uncertain future. Baseball fields, bicycles, blue skies, the church, a conservative, traditional environment that cannot taint the natural way the two live their lives and the simple way their story is narrated. Imbued with a powerful beauty that stays in the mind's eye and the heart for a long time after viewing, Last Summer needs no artifice to reach the core of what the cinema really is: emotions in images.
